362. REQUIEM CANTICLES

In Memoriam: Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-68)

Music: By Igor Stravinsky (Requiem Canticles for contralto, bass, chorus, and orchestra, 1966).

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Production: Costumes and candelabra by Rouben Ter-Arutunian. Lighting by Ronald Bates.

Premiere: May 2, 1968, New York City Ballet, New York State Theater. Conductor: Robert Irving. Singers: Margaret Wilson (contralto); John Ostendorf (bass).

Cast: Suzanne Farrell, Arthur Mitchell, corps de ballet.

Note: Choreographed as a religious ceremony and performed once. The corps de ballet, in long white robes and bearing three-branched candelabra, moved on the darkened stage; a lone woman seemed to search among them, and at the end a figure in purple representing Martin Luther King, Jr. was raised aloft.
