374. VIOLIN CONCERTO (from 1973 called STRAVINSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO)



Music: By Igor Stravinsky (Concerto in D for violin and orchestra, 1931, commissioned by Blair Fairchild).

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Production: Lighting by Ronald Bates.

Premiere: June 18, 1972, New York City Ballet, New York State Theater. Conductor: Robert Irving. Violinist: Joseph Silverstein. (Annual New York City Ballet Gala Benefit.)

Cast: TOCCATA: Karin von Aroldingen, Kay Mazzo, Jean-Pierre Bonnefous, Peter Martins, 8 women, 8 men; ARIA I: von Aroldingen, Bonnefous; ARIA II: Mazzo, Martins; CAPRICCIO: Entire cast.

Note: Included in the Stravinsky Festival. The first movement is in eight parts, each overlapping into the next. Both the second and third movements are pas de deux showing contrasting relationships between the partners. The finale includes references to Russian motifs in the score. Balanchine had previously used this music for the ballet Balustrade with scenery and costumes; Violin Concerto was performed in practice clothes, without decor.
