380. CHORAL VARIATIONS ON BACH'S 'VOM HIMMEL HOCH'



Music: By Igor Stravinsky (Variations on two treatments of Vom Himmel Hoch by Johann Sebastian Bach [from his Christmas Oratorio, 1734, and his Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel Hoch for organ, 1748] for mixed chorus and orchestra, 1956, dedicated to Robert Craft).

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Production: Scenery by Rouben Ter-Arutunian. Lighting by Ronald Bates.

Premiere: June 25, 1972, New York City Ballet with children from the School of American Ballet, New York State Theater. Conductor: Robert Irving. Chorus: Gregg Smith Singers.

Cast: Karin von Aroldingen, Melissa Hayden, Sara Leland, Violette Verdy, Anthony Blum, Peter Martins, 15 women, 13 men, 12 children.

Note: Included in the Stravinsky Festival. A ceremonial piece, given once. The choral variations were accompanied by danced variations leading to a grand défilé. At the end, the dancers knelt. (See FESTIVALS DIRECTED BY BALANCHINE.)
