Balanchine Catalogue

Choreography by George Balanchine: A Catalogue of Works provides a complete premiere-performance record of Balanchine's creative output. Published to critical acclaim in a limited edition in 1983, and then updated in 1984 for broader release, this listing, prepared with Balanchine's collaboration, outlines the entire span of his creativity over a period of more than sixty years--from La Nuit at the Petrograd Theater Ballet School, choreographed in 1920 or earlier, to a revision of Stravinsky's Variations for Orchestra for the New York City Ballet in 1982, his final production.

Unlike the world of visual arts, where the catalogue raisonné has a long history, the dance world does not traditionally provide its scholars with such resources. Choreography by George Balanchine was the first, and to our knowledge remains the only, such work devoted to a choreographer.

The Catalogue covers every known work staged or choreographed by Balanchine--including ballets, opera dances, operettas, movies, staged choral works, musicals, straight plays, concert works, television, and circus--over 400 in all. Each entry gives full details of music, production, and opening-night cast, with notes on the work, revisions, stagings by other companies, and televised performances. Also included are an extensive bibliography, source notes, a chronology of Balanchine's professional life, roles he danced, festivals he directed, and various indexes.

Since the volume is now out of print and twenty years out of date, the Foundation plans to update and digitize the Catalogue in order to make its wealth of information available to the general public on the Web. Nancy Reynolds, the Foundation's director of research, will lead a team of scholars who will review the original content and make the necessary revisions. The target for completion is 2004, the year of Balanchine's centennial. Funding is being actively pursued.

This project is key to the Foundation's mandate to preserve and perpetuate the Balanchine legacy and, by extension, to establish the Foundation as the definitive source of Balanchine information.
